The Orange County Environmental Protection Division (EPD) is seeking to fill a Professional On Call position to provide professional support to the Green PLACE Program which oversees the acquisition and management of Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL).

Orange County is home to some of Florida's most unique natural habitats such as Sandhill, Scrubby Flatwoods, Mesic and Wet Flatwoods, Wet prairies, Cypress domes and sloughs. Since 1995 Orange County has been preserving these unique habitats while providing an opportunity for the public to enjoy their natural beauty and the flora and fauna protected by these natural areas. The Green PLACE (Park Land Acquisition for Conservation and Environmental Protection Program) continues to preserve, manage and enhance these lands for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

Job Description

General Functions

The successful candidate will serve as part of a team responsible for evaluation of potential ESL acquisitions as well as conduct the development and implementation of nature-based recreational amenities. Work is characterized by considerable independence and responsibility to exercise initiative, and carry all assignments through to completion.

Representative Duties/Assignments

  • Assisting with the evaluation and acquisition of new ESL properties.
  • Assisting with Nature-based recreational activities on all Green PLACE Properties, and oversight of Contractors that maintain Orange County Green PLACE properties.
  • Assist with monitoring of habitats and wildlife and with a focus on the the management of invasive species.
  • Participate in studies, surveys and specialized research.
  • Attend public meetings, make presentations and provide public assistance as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in environmental or civil engineering, the natural sciences, or a related field or a student at the Junior level in a four year program in one of the aforementioned major course work in the focus areas of environmental or civil engineering, the natural sciences or a related field.

Must Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must be able to perform job related tasks, which include but are not limited to: climbing, walking over uneven ground, lifting up to 50 pounds and occasional exposure to adverse weather.

Preferences

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365
  • Proficiency with ARCGIS software and/or Arc Pro
  • Be able to obtain Natural Area Herbicide applicator license
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work projects
  • Experience with Central Florida flora and fauna
  • Technical writing skills

Pay Grade: 418 - From $22.51 to $33.76
