Role Description The Director, Board of Directors at Shakthi US is a volunteer role based in Orlando, FL, responsible for providing strategic leadership, governance, and oversight of organizational activities. Directors will participate in board meetings, guide long-term planning, review organizational performance, and ensure alignment with Shakthi US’s mission and values. Day-to-day responsibilities include collaborating with executive leadership on reviewing program effectiveness, monitoring compliance with legal and ethical standards, and supporting fundraising and community outreach efforts.

Directors will help establish and evaluate organizational priorities, approve major initiatives and budgets, and foster relationships with stakeholders, partners, and donors. This volunteer role also involves championing culturally sensitive, survivor-centered practices and advocating for the needs of the South Asian community and other survivors of domestic violence.

Core Qualifications

Knowledge of domestic and intimate partner violence issues, survivor-centered approaches, and trauma-informed practices; familiarity with the South Asian community and culturally responsive services is highly beneficial.

  • Strong skills in strategic planning and organizational oversight, including budgeting, risk management, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse communities, survivors, staff, volunteers, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to support fundraising, donor relations, and community engagement, including participation in events, campaigns, and advocacy initiatives.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and non-discriminatory practices, and the ability to uphold confidentiality and ethical standards in all governance activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, law, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field; advanced degree or relevant certifications are a plus.
  • Prior board service or leadership experience in mission-driven organizations within Orlando, FL or similar communities is preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit governance, board leadership, or senior organizational management, preferably in social services, advocacy, or community-based organizations is preferred.
